About Tramore Sand Dunes SAC (Special Area of Conservation)

Tramore Sand Dunes SAC is located along the southeastern coast of Ireland, near the town of Tramore in County Waterford. This Special Area of Conservation covers approximately 579 hectares of sand dune habitat, which includes embryonic dunes, mobile dunes, and stabilized dunes. The landscape is characterized by wide sandy beaches that transition into extensive dune systems, providing critical habitat for both rare flora and fauna. Among the notable species found here are the rare and protected orchids, various dune grasses, and invertebrates such as the great yellow bumblebee. The dunes play an important role in coastal protection by buffering against sea erosion and supporting biodiversity.

Tramore Sand Dunes have historical significance as a place used for traditional grazing and dune management practices that helped maintain the ecosystem's health. Today, the area attracts nature lovers, bird watchers, and walkers seeking tranquility by the sea, with informal trails allowing exploration through diverse dune habitats and coastal views. Visitors can observe numerous shorebirds and seasonal waders, particularly in quieter months. Though there are no formal campgrounds on site, nearby Tramore town offers accommodations and facilities. The SAC’s conservation status helps protect both the landscape and its species from pressures such as development and recreational overuse. Tramore Sand Dunes SAC offers an accessible coastal experience highlighting the ecological importance of Ireland’s dune environments, appealing to those interested in nature conservation, photography, and outdoor recreation.
